When I was pregnant with my daughter, a friend of mine was really into making her own cloth diapers and she convinced me to make my own.  Because we were living in Germany, cloth diapers were expensive and we didn’t have as many choices and disposables were expensive too.   So I embarked on the diaper making journey of a lifetime.  For days I sewed and I sewed and I sewed!  I went to thrift stores to find old flannel sheets and soft towels.  I tore up old t-shirts and learned the best way to attach elastic.  I’m sorry to say that I don’t really have much advice on this front, but my friend did share a pattern with me that I have used and thought it was the best free pattern out there.  The instruction booklet shows you how to put it all together and gives good advice on different fabrics to use.  I chose to make a pocket diaper and then buy one-size waterproof covers and microfiber inserts.  If you’re new to cloth diapers, it may help to buy a few commercial ones to see how they put them together before trying your own.  And as a friendly warning, plan on having a lot of stretchy clothes for your baby/toddler.  Their cute little bums will be larger with cloth diapers.
